The EU and most vulnerable Developing Countries working together to tackle climate change
Initiated in 2007 by the European Commission, the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) intends to deepen dialogue, cooperation and enhance support on climate change between the European and poor developing countries, the most vulnerable to climate change, in particular Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Projections on the effects of climate change show that LDCs and SIDS are hardest hit by the adverse effects of climate change while they have the least capacity and resources to react and adapt to climate impacts. Among the main activities done by the GCCA, one can find financial agreements with selected beneficiary countries, regional dialogue events to deepen cooperation on climate change and technical assistance such as project development and capacity building activities.
The Government of Thailand is hosting a four -day technical workshop on "Mainstreaming Climate Change into National Development Planning and Budgeting", organised by the European Commission, in Bangkok from 14 to 17 March 2012.
The Technical Workshop will involve senior officials from both Ministries of Finance and Ministries responsible for climate change in Asia. Senior representatives from regional organisations, the EU and other partners active in the field of climate change will also participate.
On 27-28 January 2012, immediately following the OCT-EU Forum meeting, a workshop on ‘mainstreaming climate change in the planning and budgeting of national development' was organised in Brussels for OCT representatives.
This workshop built on training materials developed for GCCA regional seminars, with some amount of customisation (in the form of illustrations and exercises) to make it relevant for OCTs.
Thirteen participants from eight OCTs attended it, alongside a few EC representatives.
