Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognised for their contributions to climate change adaptation and mitigation, disaster risk reduction and resilience building. “Why Nature-based Solutions are crucial for climate and resilience” is the topic of the EU side event programme at COP26 presenting concrete experience from the field from EU GCCA+ and other partners. The event will take place at the Brussels Studio (Brussels Bloom Hotel, Rue Royale 250, 1210 Brussels) from 12.30 to 13.30 CET (limited attendance) on 3 November 2021 and it will be accessible online.
The event explores evidence (i.e. restoration and Sustainable Integrated Land Management) on what NbS bring as climate, environmental, economic and social benefits, and to whom.
It will present:
- Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and why they are an important climate solution;
- Examples of what NbS can offer to communities and ecosystems, and that environmental, economic and social benefits are inter-dependent;
- Data and testimonies on the numerous co-benefits of using NbS, including disaster risk reduction (DRR); economic wealth; public health benefits, carbon finance, etc.
- Realistic solutions and opportunities for national and local authorities to include NbS in the context of their climate action
The European Commission International Partnership Directorate (DG INTPA), the European Union Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) and partners among which the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), CIFOR-ICRAF, and the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) are participating to the event.
