2009 SolarPaces Report

2009When this report was published in 2009, despite its long history of projects and trials, CSP was still not commercially viable mainly for economic reasons. A key technological barrier to scaling solar is that its intermittence (that is, the sun only shines during the day) does not provide baseload power generation. If solar energy is to become a major contributor to our energy supply, some form of energy storage is necessary for use during times when there is little or no sunlight. The report provides detailed explanations of technologies to concentrate solar power for power generation, and what is needed to support the commercialisation of CSP, namely scaled up R&D and decisions by policy makers and project developers to begin the solar transition.
