Fridays for Climate | Malawi: Income diversification for climate resilience
In Malawi, climate change has deeply affected the agriculture sector. 🌿 Zione is a farmer who rely on diverse activities to earn a living. She has livestock, crops and more recently, has invested in beekeeping.
In the past, local communities had plenty of food thanks to abundant rains. Nowadays, climate change has a negative impact on food production and there is not enough to feed the population.
Through the GCCA+ programme, the EU supports trainings for income diversification. Zione learned about beekeeping notably by joining an existing cooperative. In addition, bees pollinate crops increases the efficiency of food production. 🐝
“Once I started harvesting, I started selling. Now I can say that this house and the other things I have come from my beekeeping business.”
- Zione, Agricultural worker, Malawi.
GCCA+ programmes aim to empower women for climate resilience. 👩🏾🌾
